Donald Duermit

September 15, 1926 — September 13, 2022

Donald Joseph Duermit, 95, Dallas, PA passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at River View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Wilkes-Barre, PA. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of the late Joseph Wilson Duermit and Florence Hoffman Duermit.

Don was a graduate of Withrow High School, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1944.  Shortly thereafter he joined the Army to proudly serve during World War II.  After training, he was assigned to the 27th Infantry Division and deployed to Okinawa, Japan in July ‘45.  During the post-war occupation, Don served in Aizuwakamatsu, Japan and ultimately at the Sugamo Prison in Tokyo through ‘46.

Upon returning home from Japan, Don earned an electrical engineering degree at New York Technical Institute where he also played collegiate basketball.  A skilled all-around athlete, he also played semi-professional baseball in the greater Cincinnati area over the next 10+ years.

Don’s career began in purchasing and sales engineering, then progressed to manufacturing plant engineering and production management with Interstate Bakeries Corporation where he served in Cincinnati, Kingston, PA, Greensboro, NC and Columbus, GA from ’60 to ’71.  He became the General Manager at Roat Hardware and Supply Co., Kingston, PA, in ’72 through ’85, playing a big role in the rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Agnes in ’72.  Don then became owner and manager of R. B. White Hardware in Ashley, PA until his retirement in ’92.  Over his career, he was known for his great problem-solving skills and work ethic, but also for the care he took of his employees and his dedication toward his customers and community.

Don was a playful, loving, and nurturing husband, dad, uncle, grandfather and friend.  He loved to have fun, tell a good joke, Swing dance with his bride Marie, play golf, ping-pong and cards, shoot hoops and toss the football with family and the neighborhood kids.  He loved his neighbors, friends and fellow Shavertown United Methodist Church members.  He was a role model and taught great life lessons.  He leaves us all with very fond memories.

Don was preceded in death by sister Eileen Crawford, brother Marvin Duermit and granddaughter Kristina Leigh Duermit.

Surviving are his wife and love of his life for 70 years, the former Marie Van Lierop, sister Doris Matthews and her husband John, daughter Shauna Duermit Pearsall and her husband Adrian James, son Kevin Donald Duermit and his wife Vernanne Lord, grandchildren, Adrian Ross Pearsall and his wife Holly (Brockway), Stuart Donald Pearsall and his wife Jennifer (Brennan), Deanna Katherine (Duermit) Larson and her husband Nathan, Hilary Nicole Pearsall, Benjamin Kevin Duermit and his wife Natalie (Potts), great grandchildren Lia Marie Pearsall, Adrian Merric Pearsall, and Patrick Benjamin Duermit, and his cherished rescue dog Cookie.

Funeral services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place at Forty-Fort Cemetery.
