William A. Hartzel, 92, Dallas, passed away Thursday, September 26, 2024, at Allied Hospice, Wilkes-Barre, with his sons at his side.
Born September 24, 1932, in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late William E. and Elizabeth Dillon Hartzel and a graduate of Grand Army of the Republic Memorial High School, class of 1950, and Pennsylvania State University-Wilkes Barre earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, and sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Hartzel Dwyer. Surviving are his sons, David W. Hartzel, Mililani, HI, and Paul W. Hartzel and his wife, Marie, Randolph, NJ, and his grandchildren, Carter and Harrison Hartzel.
Bill was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Korea from 1953-54 as a member of the 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Good Conduct, National Defense Service, Korean Service and United Nations medals and rose to the rank of corporal.
Prior to his retirement in 1997 from Chamberlain Corporation, Scranton, he was employed by RCA, Atlas Chain, Ingersoll Rand Corporation and Dorr-Oliver.
Some of the happiest days of his life were the birth of his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed reading to them at bedtime when they were children and teaching them the fundamentals of baseball and football.
Bill was a do-it-yourselfer, making many improvements to the family house. He enjoyed designing and building things, solving household problems and repairing anything.
Playing golf with neighbors and his son, David, was a favorite pastime, especially after he retired. He played numerous golf courses in Hawaii on his many visits there to see David. Once he was no longer able to play golf, he became a member of the Back Mountain Railroad Club, bringing him back to model railroading, which he had enjoyed working on with his father every Christmas from his early childhood into his late teens.
Bill will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
