Sumner R. Bachman

Sumner Robert Bachman, 78, of Dallas, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family.

He was born November 20, 1947, in Kingston, PA. He graduated from Dallas High School in 1965 and later earned a degree in Business Education from College Misericordia in 1973. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.

Sumner served as an educator at SCI Dallas for many years, where he taught GED courses. He also taught computer and Hotel Restaurant courses at Luzerne County Community College. He was the proud owner and operator of the Night Owl, which he was especially proud to say was the first bar in the area to serve chicken wings. In his earlier years, Sumner was affiliated with Ertley as a sales manager. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge #354 F&AM, Shickshinny. Sumner generously volunteered his time as an auctioneer for the Back Mountain Library Auctions.

Known as the life of the party, Sumner loved spending time with family, playing cards with his friends, and cheering on his beloved Green Bay Packers. Above all, he loved supporting his grandchildren and could always be found celebrating their accomplishments, cheering them on in all of their activities, and taking them for ice cream afterward.

Sumner was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Grace Morris Bachman. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Christine Steele Bachman, at home; daughters, Heather Hontz and her husband, Edward, Dallas; Zoe Grey and her husband, Thomas, Sweet Valley; and Holly Kline and her husband, George, Lake Township; son, Sumner Robert Bachman II and Shirley, Collegeville, PA; sister, Grace Bachman Pesikey; six grandchildren, Edward Hontz II, Kalina and Mason Grey, Hunter Grace, Hannah, and Hailey Kline; several nieces and nephews; and lifelong friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Richard H. Disque Funeral Home, Inc., 2940 Memorial Highway, Dallas, PA. Friends may call Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Interment will be in Mt. Greenwood Cemetery. On line condolences may be made at Disquefuneralhome.com
