Ronald Duane Heffner, 63, of Shavertown, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 6, 2020 following an arduous battle with pancreatic cancer. Ronald was born at JC Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon, PA. He was the son of the late Ronald Zane and Betty (Griffith) Heffner. He was a 1975 graduate of Dallas High School and had earned an associate’s degree at Luzerne County Community College in Architecture.
Ronald recently retired from Weis Markets, having spent over 20 years serving the company in various roles, most recently as a Store Manager. He began his career in the grocery industry in his teens, beginning his work at ACME Markets, where he would later meet the love of his life, Rosemary. He often described seeing Rosemary walk off an elevator during a company trip and knowing that he had found his soulmate. In 2018 the Mountaintop Store, which he managed, earned the title of Store of the Year within the Weis Markets company. As a result, Ronald was chosen as one of the top 10% of managers in the country, and was a finalist for the elite title of Store Manager of the Year.
Ronald was loved and appreciated by his co-workers, having mentored and assisted many of them in the advancement of their careers. He took great pride in his work, held everyone to the highest of standards, and worked hard to provide a great experience for his shoppers.
Ronald was a quiet man with a quick wit. He loved telling jokes and seeing people laugh. He wanted nothing more than to be gathered with those he loved, sharing stories and making memories. He was in a lot of ways the glue of his family, always ready to lend a hand or help in any way possible. He had a beautiful way of reaching people with his compassion. He often donated to those in need, whether through his work with Weis Markets, or through his own personal relationships. He loved vacationing with his family, and he loved the beach. He enjoyed watching sports and “discussing” his Eagles, and he was his daughter's basketball coach for Dallas Youth Basketball many years ago.
Ronald had an immense connection with his faith and was a member of St. Therese's Church in Shavertown. He often mentioned knowing that God would provide for him, even during his most difficult moments, and he lived his life by the mantra, “Trust and Believe”.
Ronald took great pride in his home, having remodeled most of it himself. He had a great talent for creating blueprints and designs for projects, and was always working on something around his house. He also enjoyed helping his daughter and her family with projects around their home.
Of all of Ronald's many accomplishments, the title he cherished the most was that of being Pappy, having two beautiful grandchildren who adored him. He spent every free moment traveling “down the Pike” to be with them. The love he had for his family was unparalleled and he will be missed beyond measure. He was truly one of a kind.
Ronald was preceded in death by his wife, the former Rosemary Graboski, his parents, Ronald (Zane) and Betty Heffner, and his lifelong best friend, Mark Engler. He is survived by his daughter, Crystal Heffner-Spurlin and her husband, Lewis Spurlin, and their children Sariah Rose and Zane Xavier Spurlin. Also surviving are his sisters, Jeanne Faneck and her husband Robert, Cathy Stambaugh and her husband Robert, and Linda Heffner Bannon; along with his brother-in-law, James Bannon, his sisters-in-law, Carol Fegley and her husband Wayne, and Susan Christiana and her husband, Dennis; along with numerous nephews, a niece, and great nieces and nephews. Together, through marriage, Ronald and Rosemary shared two sons, John Comoss and Gregory Comoss; grandchildren Delaney (Comoss) Tomes, Jack Comoss, Gregory Comoss Jr., and Olivia Comoss; a daughter-in-law, Karena Comoss; and two great-grandchildren, Lorelei and Fitz Tomes. Ronald also had a great love for his in-laws, W. David Spurlin and Elgie Spurlin and all of the Spurlin family.
