Robert P. Shivy

January 3, 1950 — September 14, 2025

Dallas

Robert P. Shivy, 75, died at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, after a brief illness. A lifelong resident of Kingston, Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Victoria Shivy. He is survived by his adopted big brother (a cousin) David A. Kovalchik of Dallas; three younger biological sisters, Patricia, Barbra, and Victoria; and numerous friends in and around the Wyoming Valley. On Bob’s behalf, we would like to thank Mr. Bob Havrilak, Mr. Bill O’Boyle, and Ms. Irene Mackiewicz for their abiding interest in his life and well-being.

Bob was dealt a difficult hand in life. A delay in diagnosis of his congenital hypothyroidism left him with multiple disabilities at a time when virtually no special educational or social services were available. Despite this, Bob graduated from Wyoming Valley West High School, Luzerne County Community College, and King’s College. With grit and determination, he developed the skills needed to hold full-time employment (Carrol’s hamburgers, the Master Host Inn, and Benco Dental Supply), own and drive a car, and live independently at Dan Flood Tower. Bob was a lifelong member of St. Ignatius Church Kingston attending and ushering regularly until this was interrupted by health concerns. Bob participated in the men’s group, staffing summer bazars and children’s functions, and he helped deliver take-out holiday meals. All along a few steady but invisible hands helped guide him and ensure his success.

Bob loved hearing the church bells ring. But he especially loved festivals and gatherings, including WVW reunion dances, catholic charismatic renewal retreats, and events at the Kirby Center. He looked forward to every holiday on the calendar. He was a fan of American top 40’s music and Steelers football, and he laughed himself silly watching the Three Stooges. Bob collected coins and carved out time every day for jigsaw puzzles. Earlier in life Bob enjoyed cycling, picking wild blueberries and blackberries, and the company of family dogs.

Per his wishes, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Ignatius Church, 339 N. Maple Ave., Kingston, PA, 18704 Thursday, September 25, 2025 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to a charity of your choice.
