Howard Shafer

October 26, 1936 — January 3, 2018

Howard E. Shafer, 81, Dallas, passed away, Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. Born in Laurel Run he was the son of the late H. Sterling and Emily Drumheiser Shafer and was a graduate of Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, class of 1954.

Howard was in Quality Control with International Paper in Hazleton. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Dallas, and an active member of its The Lutheran Brotherhood. Howard was a Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the Oddfellows. One of his favorite hobbies was woodworking.

He was preceded in death by his wife the former Barbara Birkenhead who passed away just three weeks ago. Sister, Betty Mae Correll. Brothers, Fred, Henry, and William. Surviving are Son, Jonathan Shafer and his wife Betsy, Wilkes-Barre. Daughters, Debra Smith and her husband Thomas, Sweet Valley, Carol Staats and her husband Peter, Hopewell, NJ. Grandsons, Robert, Wyatt, and Thomas, Great Grandson, Parker. Several Step Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Also several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Dallas with The Rev. Charles Grube, officiating. Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at The Richard H. Disque Funeral Home, Inc., 2940 Memorial Highway, Dallas.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church c/o P.O. Box 802, Dallas, Pa. 18612 or The Alzheimer’s Association c/o 57 N. Franklin Street, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. 18701.
