Harold W. “Sonny” Smith, 83, of Dallas, passed away Sunday, October 25, 2026, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital, leaving behind a family and a community that will miss him deeply.
Born in Sylva, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Carl B. and Lillian Steiger Smith. He was a 1961 graduate of Westmoreland High School, where he achieved first chair on saxophone.
Sonny was a hardworking man who built his career on his own terms. For 10 years he owned and operated his own oil burner service business, keeping homes across the area warm through many winters. He later joined Diamond Manufacturing, where he retired as plant manager.
Sonny believed in showing up for his community. For many years he volunteered with Back Mountain Regional Fire and EMS, and his voice was a familiar one as an auctioneer for the Back Mountain Library. He took great pride in his 50 years as a member of George M. Dallas Masonic Lodge No. 531, F&AM, Dallas. He was also a past president of the Jaycees and a member of Trucksville United Methodist Church.
Sonny was instrumental from the beginning of the Wilkes-Barre Triathlon and proudly volunteered his time to help in many capacities for over 35 years.
Tuesday evenings belonged to his card group, a standing date he looked forward to all week. He also had a patient eye and a steady hand for stained glass, one of his favorite pastimes.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Cecil, Cletus, Robert, and William Smith.
Above all, Sonny was devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife, the former Shirley Johnson, at home; his sons, Russell Smith and his wife, Pennie, of Jessup, MD, and Ronald Smith and his wife, Sharon, of Meshoppen, PA; his grandchildren, Michael, Robert, Steven, Erin, and Maura Smith; and his great-grandchildren, Scarlet, Levi, and Adalyn Smith.
Sonny will be remembered for his hard work, his willingness to serve others, and the pride he took in the people and the things he cared about most.
