Eleanor S. Cook Mrs. Eleanor (Shuba) Cook, a cherished mother and sister, passed away on March 16, 2024 after a brief illness at the Meadows Nursing Center in Dallas, PA. She had just turned 93 years old on March 4 and was a resident of Shavertown, PA for over 60 years. Eleanor was born in 1931 in Hanover Township to Ernest and Sue (Salko) Shuba, both of whom were immigrants to the USA. Her father came from Germany as a teenager in 1921, and her mother came from Czechoslovakia in 1920. Both of her parents became proud naturalized citizens of this country. Eleanor grew up primarily in Kingston, PA and graduated from Kingston High School in 1948. Upon graduation she started a career as a secretary working for seven years at Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Wilkes Barre. Meanwhile, she married William F. Cook (presently deceased) with whom she had five children, four boys and a girl. That marriage ended in 1975 after 25 years, leaving her with the task of raising five children as a single parent. She returned to the world of work at the TV Reader’s Service in Kingston for 11years. Eleanor then moved on to a very responsible position at Wilkes University as the Administrative Asst. to the Vice President of Academic Affairs, retiring after 17 years in that role. Throughout her retirement, her greatest joy was being a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Eleanor embodied the essence of love and kindness. Her presence brought warmth and comfort to all who knew her. Each day she looked forward to reading the local newspapers from beginning to end to keep in touch with what was going on in the world and her community. She also became quite adept at solving crossword puzzles to help keep her mind sharp. Eleanor will long be remembered for her unwavering loyalty and commitment to her family. She is survived by her children, William (Mary) AZ, Michael (Lyn) FL/ME, Mark, FL, Sue Ellen (David) MD, James, PA. Her extended family includes four granddaughters, Shannon, PA, Katie (Ian), CT, Channing, London UK, Sinclair, CO, two great grandsons, Kelly and Shane, CT, and her brother, Ernest R.
